Did you know that law enforcement goes all the way back to thousands of years ago in ancient China? There were prefects, each having a limited authority and tenure. They oversaw civil administration of their jurisdiction, reporting to governors appointed by the emperor of a particular dynasty. In ancient Greece, magistrates used publicly owned slaves to guard and keep order. Citizens, themselves, were left to investigate crimes.
The Roman Empire utilized the army to provide security while medieval England had the local lords and nobles maintained order in their lands, appointing a constable to enforce the law. We’ve all heard of the Bobbies and Scotland Yard since that time. The Gendarmes in France have been well known for centuries.
The word “police” was actually borrowed from the French in the 18th century but the American method of policing was based on the British form of law enforcement. The police in the U.S. are trained that the use of deadly force is a last resort and to be used only to save a life, their life as well as ours. The cops are a force to be admired and emulated.
Do you know where the word “cop” comes from? I did some research and came up with the following two beliefs:
- Some claim that “cop” is the abbreviated for “Constable on Patrol.”
- Some suggest that “cop” comes from “copper” which is the metal out of which police badges are made of.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to substantiate either one of these. However, it is a known fact that “cop” tends to have derogatory connotations which are used instead of police officer, policeman, policewoman, officer of the law, sheriff, deputy and so on.
Did you know that the first police force ever established was proposed and established in London in 1822 by Sir Robert Peeler who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain in the early 1800s? And British cops or policemen are nicknamed after him — Bobbies or Peelers.
